1. Make Paper Planes
Look up great new layouts or teach your child the classic folds of paper planes.

2. Build a Fort
Every child loves to pretend to be in the wild west or camping out. Capture that creativity and build a fort as a hide out or camp site inside.

3. Picnic
Load up a basket or backpack with all the fixings for your lunch or dinner and a blanket. Head out to your local park or even your front lawn and have a fun meal.

Without Father’s Day there would be no tacky ties; no sales on golf pants or fishing vests; and no mad rush to find the perfect cut of barbecue beef. Sonora Dodd, the daughter of a widowed Civil War veteran, heard a sermon about Mother’s Day and organized the first official Father’s Day celebration in 1910. Father’s Day Fact: Surprisingly, only $317 million was spent on car-care and automotive-supply gifts in 2009. But then again, even a grease monkey might prefer a simple yet heartfelt card. Over twice as much ($752 million) went toward greeting cards.

4. TCBY
The frozen-yogurt chain has long supported Father’s Day with special freebies. This year’s TCBY gift is a free cup or cone of frozen yogurt. They have all the flavors you would expect at an ice-cream shop.

5. Recreation Centers and Theme Parks
If you have an active family and Father’s Day weather turns out especially beautiful, visit your local recreation center. Guys tend to enjoy interactive outings and some centers offer free admission for dads on Sunday. Call ahead to your local YMCA, health club or swimming pool for special deals.

Father’s Day Fact: Estimated average spending for Father’s Day dropped nearly $4 in the last year, hovering at around $90.89. Sounds like the whole nation is jumping on the freebie wagon — not a bad place to be.

6. Entertainment Parks
On Sunday, Six Flags season-pass holders can bring Dad free with three other friends or family members.

Other parks also offer Dad’s Day deals. Pop gets in free to Wisconsin’s Noah’s Park, the largest water park in the U.S., with the purchase of a child’s ticket. Season pass holders to Knott’s Berry Farm can “bring a friend,” a.k.a Dad for just $9.99. (Regular admission is $53.99 to $44.99 for adults.)

Father’s Day Fact: Father’s Day is the fifth most popular card-sending holiday, behind Mother’s Day and Christmas.

7. Michael’s Craft Store
“The Knack” is a special program designed for creative children and sponsored by Michael’s through June 19. This hands-on program includes six separate craft events for kids under age 12. Some require a purchase of a coffee mug or picture frame, but the make-a-card and duct-tape wallet night are complimentary. Be sure to arrive early as the program ends when supplies run out.

You must be a member of The Knack program to participate in family events, but registration is free and your membership never expires.

Father’s Day Fact: An estimated 1.7 million single-parent fathers make up 15 percent of all single-family homes.

You’ll find some of the best sales this year online, but that doesn’t mean going cheap. The Internet merchant 6pm.com offers discounts of up to 75 percent on a respectable selection of name-brand clothing. Search through six categories of dad-specific merchandise, from “The Jet-Setter Dad,” with briefcases and luggage, to “The Sports Dad,” with athletic shoes and sports watches. Many oldies-but-goodies, including wallets, belts and — yes — ties are available for less than $50 through June 20.

Father’s Day Fact: Nearly 40 percent of Americans who shopped for Father’s Day gifts did so at a discount store. Almost 18 percent did so online.

9. IHOP “I Heart Dad” Contest
Maybe some father’s can resist pancakes, but not many. Although IHOP isn’t offering a deal specific to Father’s Day, the chain is asking children across the nation to tell them in 200 words or less exactly why they “heart” daddy. IHOP is accepting submissions through June 20 and five winners will receive a $100 gift card to the restaurant. Buy dad a $25 gift card and IHOP will tack on an additional $5. The extra dough has to be redeemed by July 11.

Father’s Day Fact: Over half of all people buy gifts exclusively for a father or stepfather, while only 5 percent shop for a grandfather or brother. That doesn’t seem fair.

DIY IDEAS

10. Homemade BBQ and Grilling Recipes
Call it intuition, but Sonora Dodd was on the right track when she decided Father’s Day should be a summer holiday. Barbecuing and dad go together like a tangy rub and a rack of ribs. Even if your backyard chef already makes his own sauces, rubs and marinades, trying a new homemade flavor will switch things up. My favorite website, AllRecipes.com, discusses flavor combinations so Dad can perfectly match recipes to his favorite meats.

Dads with a sweet tooth can add a little cinnamon sugar to the sauce. Is he a fire-breather? Chop in some fresh jalapeno.

To add a final personal touch, print off retro daddy-o labels to identify Dad’s special brand.

Father’s Day Fact: Around 76 million Americans barbecued in 2009. You could call Father’s Day a “gateway” to summertime grilling.

11. Start a “Dream Fund”
Help Dad save for pricey items like a flat-screen TV, parts to rebuild a special car, supplies for a home-brewing kit. He might not talk about it much, but such goals are hard to meet. Give Dad that extra little push by starting a “dream fund.” Initiate a separate bank account or stock a jar on the kitchen counter with cash.

This fund is especially exciting for younger children because they can actively contribute. They may only have pennies to give, but the satisfaction of helping the family is a gift in itself.

Summertime is nearly upon us, bringing abundant barbecues, copious camp outs and fun-in-the-sun galore. Memorial Day weekend is arguably the granddaddy of summer kick-offs, so what better way to greet the season than with FREE activities, hot deals and events that honor the occasion.

2. Museums

A handful of museums and galleries will close for the holiday, but many others will offer free admission to the general public. The American Association of Museums has a state-by-state list of accredited museums and phone numbers, so call ahead to check on any deals or closures at the location that interests you.

If you’re in the Nation’s Capitol, all 16 Smithsonian museums and parks continue to be free, but several are offering special Memorial Day exhibits.

3. Theme Parks

Theme and water parks kick into high gear this weekend, with several offering free or discounted admission for veterans and active-duty members of the military. Knott’s Berry Farm, Cedar Point and all 15 Cedar Fair sites are free on Sunday and Monday for vets and active-duty military, with special discounts for up to six family members. Even if you have to pay for entry, most parks feature free fireworks shows.

4. Store Discounts

While department stores duke it out over the best sale offerings, smart shoppers — especially those looking for a new summer wardrobe — will head to outlet malls where already low prices are slashed even more. Over 60 of Premium Outlets’ locations will offer mall-specific deals, most offering 20 percent to 70 percent off a store’s entire selection. 5. Buy.com

6. Texas Appliance Tax Breaks

If you happen to live in the Lone Star State, Memorial Day weekend is a great time to replace rickety old air conditioners before the summer swelter. The Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday gives shoppers a break from all local and state taxes for the weekend. The deal is available for most Energy Star-certified products. Installation is included for some deals.

7. Parades

Cities from coast to coast play host to parades and memorial services. Most parades take place on May 31, but check VetFriends.com for a list of activities specific to your state, like wreath-laying events, free outdoor concerts and, if you live near a military harbor, ship tours.

New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C, and San Francisco each offer celebrations that annually attract over 10,000 people.

Remember to keep your eye on the skies. According to The Farmer’s Almanac, rain and thunderstorms are common throughout the country in late May.

8. Airshow

Airshows are an exhilarating way to bring the family together and see some impressive aerial acrobatics. The Experimental Aircraft Association, an organization for aviation enthusiasts, has a searchable database of airshows specializing in everything from WWI-era biplanes to ultramodern jets. For most, the only cost is gas to reach the airfield (and occasionally parking).

The New York Airshow at Jones Beach on May 28 and 29 is a standout, featuring a performance by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

9. I-500

The Indianapolis 500 starts its engines on May 30 at the largest stadium in the world. It may be too late for tickets, but you can still watch the race at home. Fire up your back-porch grill, invite some friends over and have an Indy themed party. You’ll avoid the crowds (not to mention flying tires) and still have a great time.

10. Services

While having your fun, keep in mind Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for those who gave their lives to protect our country. Most veterans and service organizations — including Elks and Rotary — offer intimate ways to be involved during the weekend, from volunteering at ceremonies to participating in parades. 11. National Recognitions

The organizers of the National Moment of Remembrance ask Americans to pause at 3 p.m. Monday and honor those who’ve made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom.

Another way to recognize Memorial Day is to buy a Buddy Poppy from the Veterans of Foreign Wars . This 75-year-old program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans’ welfare and the well-being of their dependents.

1. Manicure & Pedicure
If you’re good at polishing nails, give Mom a manicure, pedicure, or both! Any woman would love to get pampered, and Mom will, too.

Pull the weeds from her flower beds, or plant flowers and veggies for her. If your mom likes gardening, but she hasn’t gotten around to tending the gardens this year, do it for her.

3. Long-lost Friend

Did you know that a burglary takes place every 15 seconds in the United States? In order to help combat this disturbing statistic we have compiled a list of 16 free ways to burglar proof your house without breaking the bank.

1. Take your name off your mailbox
By taking your name off your Mailbox a thief cannot call 411 to get your phone number. Many robbers will call a house they are planning on robbing before hand to ensure that no one is home. Also try to bring in your mail as quickly as possible so they cannot get your name off of this as well.

2. Watch what you put in the trash
If you just purchased high end items such as a big screen TV or advanced computer system you should not just bring the box out to the curb. Instead break down the box and when possible try to fit it inside the trashcan. Other high risk items you might have in your trash are billing statements. Criminals can steal these and use them to open new accounts in your name. Its always better to be safe than sorry in these situations so take the time to cut up or shred important documents.

3. Ringing telephone
If you are going on a trip its best to turn down the volume of your phone, or if you can turn it to silent while your on a long trip even better. Many criminals will roam the streets listening for loud rings that are not picked up, since this is a sure sign that no one is home.

4. Take in your outdoor tools
Don’t leave the ladder outside after cleaning out the gutters. It is really important you bring these items inside, at a minimum to a closed garage when you are done. If you leave a ladder outside, you are giving would be robbers an easy way to climb in through an open upstairs window.

5. Trim your trees and bushes

Your safest bet is to keep windows closed as much as possible on the ground levels of your house even when you are at home. This will give the impression to criminals that they will never have a chance to get in.

7. Break some glass
It may seem silly, but in rural areas with high bear populations people use broken glass to keep the bears out. You can break up the glass used in marinara sauce jars or jelly jars. Then scatter this glass along your door stoop and ground level window panes. This will help to prevent any bears from breaking in to rummage through your house for a snack.

8. Don’t hide a spare key
Many of us have done this in fear of getting locked out. Whether its under a rock a few feet away from the door or somewhere behind a bush in your backyard, desperate criminals are going to be looking. The best idea if you are afraid of being locked out is to leave a key with a trusted neighbor, co-worker, or friend that you would be able to contact quickly if you got locked out.

9. Light up your house
This is not the most energy efficient way to keep menacing burglars away but it has proven effective. Leave on a light in one or two rooms throughout your house when you go out at night. Make sure that you do not have the blinds open in these rooms revealing that they are empty. This will give the illusion that someone is at home even when you are away. More times than not a burglar won’t risk being caught due to lights being on.

10. Don’t leave a note
It may seem like common sense to those who live in cities, however in rural areas it is still common to leave a note on the door telling a neighbor who is stopping by that you ran to the store and will be back soon. This is a great way to let a burglar or criminal know that you are out and wont be back for a certain amount of time. If this is the case, wait for the friend to come and suggest they ride along on your errand or call them and let them know you will be going out.

11. Be careful with voice mail messages
Sometimes it seems like a simple solution to tell all your friends that you are heading out on vacation or to leave it as your voice mail message. However, as mentioned above criminals may call your home to see if you are home before breaking in. If they are greeted by a message saying how you are in the Bahamas soaking up the sun until next Monday you can be sure they will be targeting your house.

12. Leave the radio or TV on
By leaving the Radio or TV on you are creating sound within the house. This can make it difficult for the robber to determine whether or not you are inside. Since leaving the TV on can lead to high electric costs having a battery operated radio can help conserve energy and will lead to the same results.

13. Use a house-sitter
Getting a friend to look after your house for you while you are away on a trip or vacation is a great way to keep your house safe from burglars. Keep your fridge stocked with food and they might do it for free. If you will be gone for an extended time and can’t get a house-sitter, consider having someone stop by to check on your house and take your mail in.

14. Start a neighborhood watch program
If your neighborhood has had some break-ins, it might be time to start a neighborhood watch program. Everyone can trade off days to drive around at night and make sure no one is out prowling the neighborhood.

15. Pause mail and newspaper deliveries
If you are going away for more than 48 hours, it’s a good idea to pause your mail and newspaper delivery. Having a huge pile up of newspapers on your front porch is one of the easiest ways criminals can determine who is away in the area. When you are unable to stop your paper get a friendly neighbor to pick up your papers.

16. Stock up on some cardboard cutouts
This one come from the movie Home Alone. Get a cardboard cut out of people from your local movie theater. Then place them strategically throughout the house in rooms with lights on. Consider using one as person watching TV.
